Vol. 199 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mechanised Postal Delivery Service.

47.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will establish within the State a modern mechanised postal delivery service with adequately increased remuneration for postmen, or make available to postmen a reasonable payment for the use of their own mechanically propelled transport.

Motorised delivery services are already in operation in certain areas. The scope for extension of such services is, however, limited for various reasons, including the number of "off the road" houses.

The allowance payable to a postman who uses his own motor transport is related to the mode of delivery considered appropriate to the post in question. Any other basis of payment would give rise to difficulty.
