Vol. 200 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - E. S. B. Power Station.

31.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he is prepared to consider the erection of a power station at Longfordpass, near the Thurles-Kilkenny area, which could get supply from two Bord na Móna and two privately worked bogs in the vicinity.

A proposal that a power station which would draw its fuel from the privately worked bogs at Longfordpass and Inch and the nearby Bord na Móna bogs at Littleton and Templetuohy and other bogs in the vicinity at present not being worked has already been fully considered.

Any station served by these bogs would have to operate on sod turf which is less economic than milled peat for the purpose. Moreover, the potential output from all these bogs would only be sufficient to supply a station of a size which would henceforth be quite uneconomic. The erection of such a generating station would involve the ESB in increased costs which would have to be met by consumers of electricity. In the circumstances I see no prospect for the erection of a power station in this area.
