Vol. 200 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Migratory Workers in Britain.

52.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if he can take any steps to relieve cases of hardship amongst Irish migratory workers in Great Britain in so far as such hardship has been caused by unemployment resulting from inclement weather conditions or from other such causes outside the control of the workers.

There are no funds available to me out of which payment could be made to or in respect of Irish workers, whether migratory or otherwise, by reason of their unemployment in Great Britain. Claims for benefit or assistance in respect of such unemployment fall to be dealt with under the relevant British legislation. I should perhaps add, however, that under reciprocal arrangements made between this country and Great Britain social insurance contributions paid here may, in certain circumstances, be taken into account for the purposes of paying unemployment benefit under the British scheme of national insurance.
