Vol. 202 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Legal Minimum Marriage Age.

3.

asked the Minister for Health whether he has recently sent proposals to religious and other organisations with regard to the raising of the legal minimum marriage age to sixteen years; at what date he expects to receive replies from such organisations; and at what approximate date he hopes to introduce legislation on the subject.

I have recently sent a memorandum relating to certain proposals for the amendment of the Marriage Acts to the authorities of various Churches. One of the proposals contained in the memorandum relates to the raising of the existing legal minimum age for marriage.

I am not in a position to state when the views of the various Churches on the proposals contained in the memorandum will be received. When their views have been received they will be considered and a decision on the question of the introduction of legislation will then be taken as soon as possible.
