Vol. 207 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork Salmon Fishing Restrictions.

41.

asked the Minister for Lands if he was aware of the grave concern that exists as a result of the bye-law restricting salmon fishing in the River Lee and in Cork Harbour; whether he was satisfied that such extreme restrictions were necessary; if he was aware of the serious loss of income to fishermen and the over-harsh curtailment of opportunities to sporting anglers; and if he will modify the proposed restrictions.

The recent bye-law restricting salmon fishing for the present season was made after a public inquiry and after careful and sympathetic consideration of all the relevant factors. I am not prepared to modify the restrictions imposed as I am satisfied that they are the minimum that could be expected to make any worthwhile contribution to the restoration of the salmon stocks for the benefit of all concerned. The whole position will, of course, be reviewed before the next fishing season.
