Vol. 208 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Salaries of Subpostmasters.

44.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if it is proposed to set up a commission to inquire into the salaries of subpostmasters; if so, when; and if he will state the names of the proposed members of the commission.

I intend to set up a commission shortly to inquire into certain aspects of the sub-post office system. The terms of reference of the commission and the names of the members will be announced immediately the commission has been set up.

Can the Minister say what does he mean by "shortly"?

It will not be very long now.

Is it not a fact that the Minister promised this commission when the strike by the subpostmasters ended some time ago?

I did not promise the date on which it would be established. Negotiations have been going on between the union and the Department since.

Has the Minister not dangled this carrot long enough?

I have not dangled any carrot.

Did the Minister say the commission would inquire into the sub-post office system?

Into certain aspects of the sub-post office system.

That is different from their salaries.
