Vol. 208 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Waterford Iron Mines.

52.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that there are many fine local examples of ironwork made from the products of the old iron mines at Tallow, County Waterford; and if he will have a survey made of these mines and of the old smelting works at Forge Lane, Tallow, with a view to reviving these industries and providing remunerative employment.

While the records available in the Geological Survey Office show that an iron smelting industry existed in the Tallow district of Waterford during the first half of the seventeenth century, no evidence of workings of iron mines in the neighbourhood of Tallow was found during the geological mapping of the area between 1850 and 1860 or during a subsequent investigation carried out in 1918.

Before deciding whether a further survey of the area would be justified, it would be necessary for me to have some evidence of the existence of iron mines in the Tallow area, and an indication of the location of the iron deposits.
