Vol. 208 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Increased Sickness and Disability Allowances.

4.

asked the Minister for Health if he will take steps to ensure that an increase of at least 12 per cent will be put into operation without further undue delay in connection with all allowances being paid to ill or disabled persons under the Health Acts.

5.

asked the Minister for Health if he is aware that while arrangements have been made by Mayo County Council for an increase of 12 per cent in wages and salaries no intention of increasing disability allowances has been shown; and if he will make a statement on this matter.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 4 and 5 together.

As recently as November last, substantial increases in the maximum rates payable under the Infectious Diseases (Maintenance) Regulations and the Disabled Persons (Maintenance Allowances) Regulations were authorised. These increases compensated for any increases in the cost of living and enabled the recipients of the allowances to share in the expansion of the national resources in accordance with the declared policy of the Government. In pursuance of that policy the rates payable under the regulations are kept under constant review.
