asked the Minister for Defence the number of officers, non-commissioned officers and men of the Defence Forces who volunteered for servicec with the United Nations Force in Cyprus, the number of volunteers who were accepted for the Force, and the methods employed in selecting those who were accepted.

The number of officers, non-commissioned officers and privates of the Permanent Defence Force who volunteered for service with the United Nations Force in Cyprus was 2,336 made up as follows:—

503 officers,

720 non-commissioned officers,

1,113 privates.

The number selected from among these volunteers was 636 made up as follows:—

51 officers,

214 non-commissioned officers,

371 privates.

The selections were made by the military authorities who took into account such factors as

(a) recommendations of superiors,

(b) age and physical fitness,

(c) standard of training and efficiency,

(d) general suitability for overseas service.
