Vol. 211 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Civilian Employees.

50.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware that there is gross dissatisfaction in the Curragh/Kildare area over the manner in which civilian employees have been recruited to the exclusion of those with military and old IRA service; that in one case recently an ex-NCO with 36 years' service was passed over for the job of storeman in the Curragh while the person appointed had a dairy of his own worth £1,500 and no Army service; that in another case a man of 37 years' service in the Army plus IRA service was passed over while the person appointed was a house property owner in Kildare town; and that in a third case a man with 32 years' service was passed over while the person appointed is a man who was formerly employed by an insurance company; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am not aware that there is gross dissatisfaction, as alleged, in the Curragh-Kildare area.

If the Deputy cares to supply me with more detailed information in the three cases to which he refers, I may be able to reassure him that in none of these was a person appointed to the exclusion of ex-Army or old IRA personnel who were eligible for preference.

Candidates for such appointments would be either serving civilian employees of the Department or persons nominated by the local employment exchange.
