Vol. 214 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Tralee Flooding.

7.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that in recent weeks there has been further serious flooding of the River Lee in the Tralee area, County Kerry; and that houses, land and roads are badly affected; and whether, pending preparation of the plans for the drainage of the entire Lee catchment area, he will have some emergency work immediately carried out to prevent further flooding in this area.

The Commissioners of Public Works could not undertake emergency works such as those suggested. They could deal with flooding in the area only as part of a comprehensive drainage scheme under the Arterial Drainage Act 1945 for the Lee catchment as a whole. As already indicated such a scheme is under consideration but the problem is a complex one requiring study over a number of years.

The matter has been a long time under consideration. How many more years will it take?

A good while.

Ten years?
