Vol. 214 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drainage of County Roscommon Rivers.

8.

asked the Minister for Finance whether he is aware of the serious hardship and losses suffered by farmers in the Taughmaconnell area, County Roscommon resulting from frequent and prolonged flooding of their holdings; and whether any scheme for the drainage of the Killeglin and Clonkeen rivers which cause the flooding is contemplated in the near future.

Drainage of the Killeglin and Clonkeen rivers would have to be considered as part of a comprehensive scheme for the River Suck catchment.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary aware that at least 25 townlands are involved in this and that in recent years tillage and first-class grassland is being flooded— something that never happened before? Would he take into consideration at this stage that the farmers in the area must have some relief and, in the circumstances, will he receive a deputation from the farmers so that remedial action may be discussed?

I do not think it would serve any useful purpose at this stage, but if the Deputy wants me to receive a deputation, I shall be glad to do so.

Very good.
