Vol. 221 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Kiosk.

61.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will provide a telephone kiosk in Meelick, Swinford, County Mayo.

A kiosk for this district is not planned at present as it would be completely uneconomic.

Is the Minister aware that the nearest telephone in this case is approximately six miles away? Would the Minister have this whole question investigated, with a view to providing a telephone at the earliest possible date for the people of this area?

The whole question of having telephone kiosks at every crossroads is a matter which would require consideration under a general scheme. I regard other work as of greater urgency at present. Certainly uneconomic kiosks would hardly be worth while at a time when we have so much installation work to carry out. A case could be made for a kiosk at every crossroads on social grounds.

Would the Minister agree that, where there is a public telephone in a post office and where that post office closes down at 7 p.m. to the public, it would be more advantageous to place that telephone in a kiosk outside the post office?

That is a different question.

Is the Minister aware that when the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries came to Mayo, he promised all these things?
