Vol. 224 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cross-Border Motor Traffic.

7.

asked the Minister for Finance the number of cross-Border passes issued, in respect of private motor cars registered in the State, at the Border customs posts and stations in each month between 1st April, 1965, when the pass was introduced, and 30th September, 1966.

The particulars asked for are not readily available. If the Deputy repeats the question in a week's time, I hope then to be able to give information on the lines requested.

8.

asked the Minister for Finance whether discussions are taking place between the Revenue Commissioners and the customs authorities in Great Britain with a view to relaxing the terms of issue of concession passes; and, if so, whether there is any prospect of a broader definition of the circumstances in which passes may be issued being agreed upon in the early future.

Discussions are taking place between the Revenue Commissioners and the British Commissioners of Customs and Excise on the subject of concession passes with a view to the introduction of certain modifications designed to facilitate persons resident close to the Border, who need to make frequent crossings for essential purposes, and for whom the detour involved in using approved routes is a material inconvenience. I hope to be in a position to make a statement in the matter at an early date.

It might be reasonable to assume that "at an early date" could be interpreted as "before Christmas"?

I would not like to suggest a date but I can say that most of the major points have been agreed upon and the outstanding matters relate to procedure as to putting the new scheme into operation. I should not imagine it will take very many weeks.
