Vol. 226 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Island School Teachers.

38.

asked the Minister for Education if in order to encourage national teachers serving in island schools he will consider allowing them five extra holidays per year, and give an additional increment for every three years' service on an island.

Mr. O'Malley

Since 1964 a scheme has been in operation for the payment, subject to certain conditions, of a special allowance to qualified teachers serving in national schools on islands off the coast of Ireland. The rate of allowance is £60 per year to a trained teacher and £45 per year to a qualified untrained teacher. I am satisfied that ample encouragement to serve in island schools is given by this special allowance.
