Vol. 227 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Comparable Retail Prices.

5.

(South Tipperary) asked the Taoiseach whether the average higher retail price of eight to ten per cent for many consumer items produced in this country as against comparable goods imported from Great Britain, mentioned in the Economic and Social Research Institute series in 1962, has shown any improvement; whether any recent study on similar lines has been made; and if he will make a statement on the present position.

I presume the Deputy is referring to the document "The Irish Price Level: A Comparative Study" by Edward Nevin, published in October, 1962 by the former Economic Research Institute in its Publication Series. This study purported to compare prices in Ireland with those in Great Britain for a certain number of commodities—it did not include a comparison of the type referred to by the Deputy, and I am not aware of any study on these lines.
