Vol. 229 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ballymun Road Speed Limit.

30.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will arrange for strict enforcement of the speed limit on Ballymun Road, Dublin as residents of the area are concerned about the danger of frequent breaches.

The Garda have given and will continue to give attention to the enforcement of the speed limit on Ballymun Road.

Apart from motor-cycle patrols on the road, special speed-checks by radar units are carried out from time to time. As a result of those checks, 136 persons have been prosecuted for exceeding the speed-limit in the past year and a half and a further 254 persons have been cautioned.

Can the Minister say how many have been prosecuted in respect of offences on Ballymun Road? Presumably the 136 referred to are taken on a global basis throughout the city?

Is that the figure for the whole country or for the city?

I take it is the figure for the area in question.

The speed limit has been imposed only in recent months and therefore it is extremely unlikely that 136 prosecutions have arisen in that area. The residents are very apprehensive that the limit is not being enforced.

The speed limit was changed recently to take in a new housing estate. Perhaps the number of prosecutions went up then. They were all flying by too fast.
