Vol. 232 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Cork Schools.

149.

asked the Minister for Education if he is now prepared to state when work will be started on the urgent repairs needed to the national schools at Ballygarvan, County Cork, which are at present almost uninhabitable.

Mr. O'Malley

I understand from the Commissioners of Public Works that Ballygarvan national school has recently been inspected and that a scheme for its improvement is at present being prepared. The Commissioners state that they hope to convey their proposals to the Reverend Manager at an early date, to enable him to have the necessary works put in hands.

150.

asked the Minister for Education when the extra classrooms will be provided for the national school at Glounthaune, County Cork, which are at present in a very overcrowded condition to the detriment of both the teachers and children endeavouring to learn under impossible conditions.

Mr. O'Malley

I would like to refer the Deputy to the reply to his question of 16th November, 1966, regarding the erection of a prefabricated classroom at the Glounthaune national school. The prefabricated classroom was erected in March, 1967, and there are now three teachers in the school with four classrooms. One of the classrooms is, however, small.

Should increasing enrolments warrant the appointment of a fourth teacher arrangements will be made to provide another prefabricated classroom.

151.

asked the Minister for Education when the new schools proposed for Dromina and Newtown-shandrum, County Cork, will be built.

Mr. O'Malley

Sketch plans for new schools at Dromina and Newtownshandrum have been prepared and forwarded to the Manager. Until title documents relating to the proposed sites are submitted my Department will not be in a position to sanction grants towards the cost of erecting the new buildings.

I am unable, therefore, at this juncture to say when work on the erection of these schools will begin.
