Vol. 233 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions Oral Answers. - Motor Insurance.

60.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware that insurance companies rate a car (name supplied) as 16.2 hp while the same model is rated for taxation purposes as an 8 hp vehicle; and if he will take steps to rationalise this situation and to eliminate the extra premium sought over and above that due on the basis of rating for taxation purposes.

I am informed that insurance companies operating in this country rate private cars for insurance purposes on a different basis to that used for motor taxation purposes. The rating of cars for insurance purposes is a matter of the detailed administration of their business by insurance companies and one in which I do not feel called upon to intervene.
