Vol. 234 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Arranmore Island Water Supply.

28.

asked the Minister for Local Government when he proposes to approve the contract documents for the water supply for Arranmore Island, County Donegal, which were forwarded to his Department on 3rd March, 1967.

This scheme, together with a number of other regional water supply schemes in County Donegal and elsewhere, is included in the review of regional schemes which is being carried out by sanitary authorities generally throughout the country. A decision thereon must await the outcome of the overall review.

Surely it would not take more than 24 hours to examine the contract documents and to sanction these schemes? If it is money which is holding up the schemes, would the Minister say so and we will appreciate that and understand it?

No. There is a large number of these schemes throughout the country, and in order to have the more urgent ones dealt with in the proper order, the local authorities have been asked to carry out this review and to place the schemes in their order of priority. As I said, I am at present awaiting the outcome of that overall survey.

This is a Gaeltacht tourist area and a water supply is an absolute must in such an area.

Putting it on the long finger: no money.
