Vol. 236 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - University Merger.

50.

asked the Minister for Education if he is yet in a position to state when the merger of the Dublin universities will take place.

I expect to be in a position very shortly to make an announcement on behalf of the Government in relation to this matter.

I hope the Minister will not listen to the reactionaries who are so opposed to it.

I have a question of which I hope the Minister will take note. When the merger of the university takes place in final form, is it the intention of the Government to ensure that there will be provision in the Charter of the new institution to enable the President and the Governing Body to insist that professors and lecturers of that institution will give the lectures they are paid to give and not absent themselves without notice to the students?

That is an entirely separate question.

Will the Minister also ensure that after the merger we do not have a situation in which one college is left with the humanities subjects and another goes ahead with unbalanced progress towards the science subjects?

Perhaps the Deputy will wait until he hears the Minister's announcement.

I take it that the Minister will convey the content of the supplementaries to the Minister for Education?
