Vol. 236 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fresh Water Fisheries.

31.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries whether he is aware of the widespread desire throughout the country among anglers clubs and other interested groups to have privately owned freshwater fisheries opened up for the use of the native born citizens of this country; and if he will take steps to make these fisheries available.

I am aware that some anglers, angling associations and public bodies have asked that freshwater fisheries should be nationalised. As I have said on previous occasions I would not feel justified in promoting such nationalisation for many reasons, including cost.

Give us some of the reasons.

Costs are the main one.

The Parliamentary Secretary said "for many reasons, including cost". Is he not aware there is a widespread and obvious demand for the nationalisation of these waters? Surely it is time the Government had reference to the wishes of the people of the country which have been expressed many times on this matter.

The Deputy will be aware, I am sure, that the angling fraternity appreciate the implication of this. I refer him to the speech made by the chairman, Reverend T.A. Coffey, speaking at the Salmon Anglers' Association annual dinner in Cork last week. I am sure he will find it most informative.

A Cheann Comhairle, can we see to it that the two Bs do not walk on Dáil Éireann?
