Vol. 237 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Secondary Schools.

110.

asked the Minister for Education the number of new secondary schools erected in Dublin in 1968; and the number of children catered for by these schools.

The number of secondary schools in Dublin in which buildings in the form of new schools or extensions were erected in 1968 was 25. The number of places provided in these buildings was 5,660.

Is it true, as the Deputy said in the debate on the Estimate, that any secondary school will now get a grant of 70 per cent of the cost and a loan of 30 per cent of the balance to build a new school?

That is right.

Any recognised school?

That has been the case for the past 12 months.

One hundred per cent assistance towards the construction of a secondary school?

This is Dublin schools.

Only if they agree to build in accordance with the number of "streams" which the Department fixes. In other words, if the Department say there should be two "streams" and the manager of the school says six, then they are either going to get a grant for two "streams" or no grant at all.

We have to be satisfied about the type of grant and about the type of building. We have to be satisfied about the type of education required. We discuss with the principals of the school what type of building and what types of facilities should be available.
