Vol. 237 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Establishment of Dumping Commission.

145.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether the Commission has yet been set up under the Imposition of Duties (Dumping and Subsidies) Act, 1968; and, if not, what steps are now being taken to make this Act effective.

I expect to be in a position to appoint the members of An Coimisiún Dumpála in the near future.

Can the Minister give any indication how far away "in the near future" might be? This matter is of very grave urgency in a number of quarters. There are a number of people who are very concerned and would like some information as to a date for the appointment of this commission in view of the fact that the Act has been on the Statute Book for some time and is ineffective.

I do not want to be too specific about a date but I do not think it will be very long. I should, perhaps, point out to Deputies in the meantime that action can be taken under existing legislation to deal with cases apart from the anti-dumping legislation.

Would the Minister not think it desirable to do something about this as soon as possible before it destroys our economy?

I do not think Deputy O'Connell listened to my answer to Deputy Booth.

May I appeal to the Minister to do something about this word "dumpála"?

May I remind the Deputies that we discussed this matter when the legislation was before the House and I pointed out that the word "dumping" is used in five or six European languages? While it is not very euphonious it is about the best word we can get to convey clearly what is involved. It is used in a number of languages.

It is an abomination.
