Vol. 238 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Reduction in Widow's Pension.

46.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare whether he is aware that his Department notified a widow (name supplied) in County Meath that her pension is to be reduced despite the fact that her sole income is the sum of £1 4s 0d per week; that his Department seem to be reckoning, as part of her income, the similar sum of £1 4s 0d per week accruing to her unmarried sister who lives with her; and whether, in the circumstances and taking into account that both ladies are over 60 years of age and in poor health, he will ensure that the reduction will not be made.

I am not aware that the sole income of the widow referred to by the Deputy is £1 4s 0d per week. She is assessed with the yearly value of capital received from the sale of a holding assigned to her by her late husband and with her halfshare in the income from another holding. She is not assessed with any income accruing to her unmarried sister.
