Vol. 238 No. 16

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - French Market for Pigs.

13.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he is aware of the demand in the French market for 12-14 weeks old pigs weighing 70 lbs approximately; and, if so, if he will endeavour to procure a percentage of this market for Irish farmers.

French imports of pigs and pigmeat are subject to variable import levy under EEC regulations but there is no quantitative import restriction.

I have received no application for a licence to export young pigs to France and the economics of the trade appear to be doubtful, especially having regard to its likely temporary nature.
