Vol. 239 No. 2

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Dismissal of Maintenance Craftsmen.

48.

asked the Minister for Labour if his attention has been directed to the recent dismissal of maintenance craftsmen from their employment in a firm (name supplied) in Limerick and to the contention that such dismissals are unjustified and not connected with the craftsmen's strike; and if he will arrange for his Department to immediately conduct an inquiry into this matter having particular regard to the effect a dispute in this firm would have on the building industry and the economy of the country in general.

I am aware of the general circumstances concerning the dispute to which the Deputy refers. I am not satisfied that an inquiry limited to what happened in relation to this particular firm would be useful. As work has been resumed in the firm, I am hopeful that serious adverse effects on the building industry will be avoided.

Is the Minister aware that work has not been resumed in the industry concerned, that the maintenance staff are still locked out?

I said in my reply that work had been resumed.

Not by all the staff. The maintenance staff are still out.
