asked the Taoiseach what the average percentage increase in wages and salaries has been in the first six months of this year; the average increase in declared company profits for the same period; and how this companies with the same period in each of the past two years.

The information compiled regarding changes in wages and salaries relates to average weekly industrial earnings in transportable goods industries covered by the Quarterly Industrial Production Inquiry. The latest period for which the information is available is the first quarter of 1969. Average weekly industrial earnings in the week ended 29th March, 1969, were 13.1 per cent higher than in mid-March, 1968. The average of the mid-March and midJune 1968 levels of weekly industrial earnings was 7.1 per cent higher than the appropriate 1967 figure which was 9.9 per cent above the corresponding 1966 level.

There is no corresponding short-term offical statistical series relating to company profits.
