Vol. 242 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Labelling of Wines.

44.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware that certain wines on sale in this country are incorrectly labelled; and that the consumer council in Britain is seeking more exact labelling procedure with certificate of origin; and whether his Department are contemplating similar protection for consumers here.

I have had no complaints about incorrect labelling of wines. I am not aware that there are any firm proposals for dealing with the problem in Britain although the consumer council there has had the matter under consideration. The difficulty is that it is not possible to prove the authenticity or otherwise of a name on a label by tasting or chemical analysis of the wine so that the solution of any problem of identification which may exist seems to lie mainly with the producing country.

And getting a reputable shipper.

That is another point.
