asked the Minister for Defence if he will give a detailed list of the properties owned by the Department of Defence; and the area of covered floor space in each of these properties.
Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Department of Defence Properties.
As the reply to the first part of the question is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to circulate it with the Official Report.
Particulars of the area of covered floor space in each of these properties are not readily available in my Department and I consider that the considerable work involved in ascertaining such particulars would not be warranted.
Following is the statement:

Is it true that there is no detailed record of the accommodation in the Defence Force at the present time and that during the years no such record has been kept?
That is not true, but it is true that preparation of the statistics required for the second part of Deputy's Clinton's question would take such an inordinate amount of time and labour that they would not be worth assembling.
Is the Minister telling the House that the Department of Defence or the Minister for Defence do not know the amount of covered floor space the Army possesses?
I am not saying that.
The reply the Minister has given is that he does not know and that it would take too much time to prepare the information.
I am saying that it would take a long time to assemble the information.
Do the Army personnel not spend much time on less valuable work?
This is another Fine Gael reflection on the Army. The Army are always fully occupied in training and in the protection of vital installations at the present time, and Deputy Byrne's suggestion that they are wasting their time is completely without basis.
I am suggesting they do not know the number of installations they should protect.
I am no longer surprised that Deputy Byrne should make such a suggestion as his main effort seems to be to denigrate the Irish Army as much as he can.
