Vol. 244 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mineral Ore Exports.

20.

asked the Taoiseach what is the total value of exports of mineral ores from the Republic from the initial stages of the operation up to the latest day for which figures are available with particular reference to (1) Tynagh Mines, (2) Gortadrum Mines, (3) Silvermines and (4) Avoca Mines.

Export statistics are not available in respect of individual mines. With your permission, Sir, I propose to circulate in the Official Report a statement showing the value of exports of metal ores and concentrates in each year 1950 to 1969.

Following is the statement:—

*Prior to 1950 exports of metal ores and concentrates were negligible and did not exceed £50,000 in any one year.

Would it be fair to ask the Parliamentary Secretary whether the output from Tynagh Mines would be substantially higher than from any other mine in the country?

I have no figures in respect of individual mines. The figures available are in respect of total exports from all mines.

It is a well-known fact —and I do not want to make a speech on this—that Tynagh Mines have the greatest output. In view of that fact will the Parliamentary Secretary recommend to the Government, when it comes to the selection of a site for the smelter, that Galway be given full consideration?

That is a separate question.
