asked the Taoiseach the value of cattle and meat exports to West Germany for the years 1966 and 1969.

In 1966 exports of cattle to West Germany were valued at £2,299,108 while exports of meat and meat preparations amounted to £651,874. The corresponding figures for 1969 were £80,041 and £47,577 respectively.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary not agree that this is a rather sharp drop in exports to West Germany? Will he tell the House what action the Government are taking in the matter, if any?

It is a sharp drop in exports of meat and meat preparations and it is due to the tariff barrier erected by the Common Market.

In view of our adverse trade balance with West Germany, surely the Government should take some specific and specialised action?

As the Deputy knows, there is nothing we can do while we are not members of the Common Market to export any large quantity of meat or meat preparations to West Germany. Our exports to West Germany of non-agricultural produce are up.

Could you not stop some of the imports from West Germany?
