Vol. 248 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Wicklow Unemployment.

1.

asked the Taoiseach if he is aware of the high incidence of unemployment among the male section of the labour force in Wicklow town area; and what steps he intends to take to relieve unemployment in this area.

I am informed that the recent rise in male unemployment in Wicklow was due, to a large extent, to the effect of the trade dispute in the cement industry. Following settlement of that dispute, opportunities for work in the area should become increasingly available.

The Government provide generous incentives for the promotion of industrial development. They have resulted in the establishment of a number of new industries in Wicklow town in recent years, and, in line with the Government's Third Programme of Economic and Social Development, the area will, no doubt, continue to attract sound industrial proposals.
