Vol. 251 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Property Valuations.

39.

asked the Minister for Justice whether he is aware that at present persons can engage in the business of valuing property, although they have no qualifications whatsoever for the work; and if he will bring in legislation which will ensure that in future only properly qualified people can engage in this business.

I am not in favour of the introduction of controls of the kind in question save where a clear need for them can be demonstrated. I am not aware that there has been any volume of complaint in regard to the competence of valuers. In any case I have doubts as to the practicability of trying to guarantee by means of some sort of licensing system that those engaged in this kind of business are competent at it.

Does the Minister's answer arise from his experience of solicitors?

It arises from my experience of valuers.
