Vol. 251 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Telephone Service.

72.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will provide a telephone kiosk at Carbury, County Kildare.

The extended kiosk programme for rural areas provides for replacement of call office telephones in local post offices by street kiosks in areas where the call office telephone is used to a fair extent. Carbury is not likely to be included in the programme as the call office telephone is little used.

Where is the nearest telephone kiosk to this place?

That I cannot say.

If the Minister had carried out investigations he would have found there was not a sufficiency of telephone kiosks in the area, which is quite remote in many ways. The Minister should consider waiving the requirements for use of the post office telephone in this case.

From investigations carried out by my Department I am quite satisfied that Carbury does not warrant and should not get a telephone kiosk.

73.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he is aware that there is an urgent need to have a public telephone kiosk at Bakersbridge, Milltown, Belturbet, County Cavan to cater for the local people and tourists; and, if so, when it will be provided.

Provision of kiosks in areas such as Bakersbridge where there is no post office is not envisaged under the extended kiosk programme for rural areas.

74.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if he will reconsider the position relating to the provision of a public telephone kiosk at Greencastle, County Donegal, in view of the fact that the present arrangements are not available 24 hours a day.

There is already a telephone kiosk at Greencastle, County Donegal, which is available on a 24-hour basis.

Could the Minister tell me where the telephone is because nobody seems to know except the Minister himself?

I feel quite sorry for the Deputy if he is unfamiliar with his constituency, but there has been a telephone kiosk at Greencastle for the past three years. It has been there since October, 1967, and is available on a 24-hour basis.

Is it on a 24-hour basis?

Yes, and there is no record of any complaint from the local people about the service from the kiosk.

75.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs when it is intended to install an automatic telephone exchange at Dungarvan, County Waterford; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

An order is being placed for the supply and installation of an automatic exchange at Dungarvan and it is expected that it will be completed in about three years time.
