Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Meath Gaeltacht.

24.

asked the Minister for Lands if the Land Commission have any proposals to provide sites for local young married people wishing to settle in the County Meath Gaeltacht areas.

25.

asked the Minister for Lands if the Land Commission have any proposals to provide sites for industry in the County Meath Gaeltacht areas.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 24 and 25 together.

The Land Commission's primary function is land settlement and the Deputy will appreciate that, in the disposal of lands in the County Meath Gaeltacht areas, the first priority must be the enlargement and improvement of the existing smallholdings there. While applications for housing sites will be considered, it is most unlikely, having regard to the limited amount of land available, that sites could be provided for private individuals.

Of course, the Land Commission have always given, and will continue to give, sympathetic consideration to applications for building sites by the local authority which, strictly speaking, is the primary agency for the provision of housing.

An application for an industrial site in or near Rathcarn has been received and the Land Commission are in communication with the firm concerned about the matter.
