Vol. 258 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Northern Ireland Situation.

19.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if the Government have considered inviting Dr. Kurt Waldheim, United Nations Secretary-General, to Ireland to make an on-the-spot assessment of the Northern Ireland situation.

The Secretary-General knows that we would be most happy to welcome him to Ireland. However, I think that it is unnecessary to invite him here for the purpose mentioned by the Deputy as Dr. Waldheim is fully aware of the whole situation in the North, and of the Government's views thereon.

20.

asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he received any communication from friendly Governments following the Derry tragedy; and, if so, from whom.

I have received many communications from representatives of other Governments concerning the situation in the North-some with special reference to the deaths in Derry on 30th January last. It would not be in accordance with normal diplomatic usage to disclose their origin or content.

Would the Minister consider publishing a list of the friendly Governments?

I do not see how this could help. The diplomatic usage is correct.
