Vol. 258 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Married Nurses' Salaries.

12.

asked the Minister for Health if he has received a recommendation from the Irish Nurses Organisation to the effect that married nurses re-employed in the hospitals services should have increments in their salaries commensurate with the responsibility of the positions held by them.

I have not received any recommendations from the INO on the lines suggested in the Deputy's question.

Married nurses are at present not entitled to hold permanent offices and are, as a rule, employed in a temporary capacity in the basic grade of staff nurse. While normally persons employed in a temporary capacity are employed at the minimum of the scale, in the case of married nurses, on reemployment, they are allowed credit, up to a maximum of five increments for previous hospital experience and are also allowed annual increments thereafter.
