asked the Minister for Finance if his attention has been drawn to a statement issued by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland to the effect that a reduction in income tax and an increase in allowance is a necessity to combat the effect of inflation on real incomes; and if he will state whether or not he envisages any change in the current system of taxation in this regard.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants in Ireland have, as in previous years, made a submission prior to the forthcoming budget in relation to certain aspects of taxation, including those referred to by the Deputy. I assume that the Deputy is in effect referring to this submission.
I am at present examining the submission, together with representations in regard to taxation made by other bodies, in the context of the budget. The Deputy will, however, appreciate that I cannot disclose in advance what my financial statement may or may not contain.
