Vol. 260 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fenit Harbour.

27.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he has received a communication from Tralee and Fenit Pier and Harbour Commissioners, County Kerry, in connection with improving discharging facilities at the pier; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The Tralee and Fenit Pier and Harbour Commissioners have asked that the area within a radius of eight to ten miles of the port, particularly as regards the journey from Fenit to Tralee, be exempted from the restrictions on haulage for reward provided for in the Road Transport Acts. To do what the commissioners ask would call for amending legislation. The Road Transport Act, 1971, removed area and commodity restrictions from about 700 merchandise licences thus increasing the number of licensed hauliers authorised to undertake State-wide carriage of all classes of merchandise. Having regard to these facilities and the facilities available from CIE, I do not consider that legislation as sought by the commissioners is warranted.
