Vol. 262 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Duty Periods.

32.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware that Army personnel engaged on security operations are on duty for periods of 30 hours at a time; if he considers this excessive; and what steps he proposes to take to remedy the matter.

It is unavoidable, in present circumstances, that personnel on security duties are, on occasions, on duty for such periods. The hours of duty, however, normally include periods spent on "stand-to" when no actual work is done and the personnel may rest. They normally receive time off after a lengthy period of duty, proportionate to the time spent on duty.
