Vol. 266 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Consumer Price Index.

40.

asked the Minister for Finance the statistical basis on which the information given in reply to Questions Nos. 24 and 25 of 6th June, 1973, was compiled.

The calculations which were the basis of the information in my reply to Questions Nos. 24 and 25 of 6th June, 1973, were undertaken by the Central Statistics Office using the weights in the official consumer price index.

The CSO used the detailed weighting pattern of the index to estimate the overall effect of price changes for each affected item equivalent to the changes in value-added tax and other charges provided for in the budget. Details of the changes in the index as thus calculated are set out in the form of a tabular statement, which, with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate with the Official Report. Following is the table:

The Minister was very coy with that information up to now. I hope it is all contained in this reply.

The Deputy is experiencing some of the frustrations of Opposition.

The people are gel ting very tired of that kind of smart reply.
