Vol. 268 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo Schools.

2.

asked the Minister for Education when it is hoped to commence work on the Boys' National School at Swinford, County Mayo.

Mr. R. Burke

Title to the site of the proposed new Boys' NS at Swinford has not yet been furnished. My Department will sanction a grant towards the erection of the school— for which sketch plans have already been prepared—as soon as good title is produced.

I am unable to say at this time when work on the erection of the school will commence.

Is the Minister aware that the position in Swinford is becoming very urgent because one of the schools in the parish has closed and the pupils there are now attending Swinford school. The existing school is in very bad condition. I would ask the Minister as a matter of urgency to try to speed up the erection of this school.

3.

asked the Minister for Education when it is proposed to start stage two of the plans for an extension to Ballina Vocational School, County Mayo.

Mr. R. Burke

Discussions are taking place with the vocational education committee regarding the acquisition of additional land for stage II of the extension to Ballina Vocational School, County Mayo, and on the accommodation to be provided.

It would not be possible to say at this stage when building work will commence.

Is the Minister aware that this answer is somewhat different from the answer he gave me some months ago? Could he state why there has been a change in policy on this school?

Mr. R. Burke

As the Deputy knows, in October, 1972, permission was given for a new six classroom block. It is expected that this building will be completed in a matter of weeks. It has been agreed to allow a further extension to go ahead and the planning process has been initiated in consultation with the CEO. There has been a briefing meeting in the Department and a work sheet has been submitted. When full details about this work sheet are decided between us we can go ahead.

4.

asked the Minister for Education when it is proposed to carry out repairs to Creevagh National School, Carrowmore, Locreen, Ballina, County Mayo.

Mr. R. Burke

My Department are sanctioning a grant for the provision of waterflushed sanitation, thermal storage heating and fluorescent lighting at Creevagh National School. The Office of Public Works are being asked to ensure that the works are carried out as soon as possible.
