Vol. 274 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Pier Improvements.

8.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if he will give particulars of the piers in respect of which repairs and improvements will be carried out in South Kerry and the Beara peninsula in West Cork this year; and the total amount of money allocated by his Department for this purpose.

As I explained to the Deputy in reply to his question of 13th March last about repair of damage to piers along the coast of South Kerry and West Cork the respective county councils are responsible for any repairs which might be necessary to the piers.

In South Kerry work is at present in progress on improvement schemes at fishery piers at Caherciveen, Portmagee and Knightstown, the total cost of which is estimated at £84,260, £63,195 of which is being provided in grants by my Department. I have also approved a grant of £12,600 towards the cost estimated at £16,800 of an improvement scheme at Scraggane but I cannot say if it will be possible to have work on this scheme commenced before the end of the current year.

Improvement schemes financed by Roinn na Gaeltachta are in progress at Dingle, Cuas na h-Eige and The Glen (Ballinskelligs) at a total estimated cost of £214,500 and that Department have also approved schemes for execution at Reen (Ballinskelligs), Dunquin and Ballinrannig which are expected to cost a total of £7,980.

In regard to the Beara Peninsula a major development work is in progress at Castletownbere which is estimated to cost £1¼ million of which £205,000 is being provided for expenditure in the current year.

I am awaiting engineering reports on improvements recommended by a special survey team for a number of other fishing ports and landing places on the coast of County Cork.
