Vol. 274 No. 9

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Extradition Legislation.

88.

asked the Minister for Justice if he has considered amending the Extradition Act, 1965, to enable persons to be extradited for offences under the British, Northern Ireland and Scottish Theft Acts.

I assume that the question is not intended to relate to offences that come into the category of political offences or offences connected with political offences. On that assumption, the position is that I am aware that certain problems have arisen in relation to offences in the nature of theft and so on, but the matter is complex and it is not clear whether or to what extent amending legislation may be necessary or what form it should take if it is necessary. There are, I understand, two relevant cases awaiting decision by the Supreme Court at the moment. The position is under review but it is likely to be some time before it will be possible to have a decision taken.
