Estimates of changes in the value of money are based on the consumer price index numbers which are calculated only in respect of mid-February, mid-May, mid-August and mid-November each year. It is estimated on the basis of the index numbers that £1 at mid-August, 1974, would purchase the same quantum of goods and services at retail prices as 87.2 pence would have purchased at mid-November, 1973.
