Vol. 276 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - University Student Costs.

14.

asked the Minister for Education the average cost to State funds in respect of a university student in the academic year 1973-74.

Mr. R. Burke

The estimated current cost, that is, not including capital expenditure on building projects, to the State of each student in the financial year 1973-74 was £736.

15.

asked the Minister for Education if, in view of the continuing marked increase in price levels generally, he proposes to increase student grants.

Mr. R. Burke

Grants under the Local Authorities (Higher Education Grants) Act, 1968, have been increased substantially in the present academic year. A further increase is not contemplated at present.

Would the Minister state the amount of the increase and how substantial it was?

Mr. R. Burke

The maximum increase brings it up to about £500. There has been a 20 per cent increase in the maintenance and the fee element increase has been included.

I asked for the increase rather than the total sum.

Mr. R. Burke

There is a 20 per cent increase in the maintenance element and from £156 to £200 in respect of fees.

Will there be any change in the qualifications for such grants?

Mr. R. Burke

The matter is under review. I am not in a position to say that there will be.

Arising out of the Minister's reply and out of his many other replies today, is there anything else happening but reviews in his Department.

Mr. R. Burke

Yes we have visits at times.
