Vol. 279 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - St. Stephen's Green, Dublin.

15.

asked the Minister for Local Government the action he proposes to take to maintain the character of St. Stephen's Green, Dublin.

Responsibility for the park at St. Stephen's Green lies with the Office of Public Works and I have no function in the matter. The conservation and redevelopment of the area surrounding the Green is primarily the concern of Dublin Corporation as planning authority.

Is the Minister aware that there are certain proposals for the commercial development of the St. Stephen's Green area and that certain properties are being bought up for a type of development that could change the character of the area? Will the Minister give an assurance that whatever redevelopment is allowed it will not destroy the character of the Green itself?

The policy of the planning authority for the area was set out in the Dublin Development Plan, 1971. They are the authority responsible for ensuring that the plan is adhered to. If it comes to me on appeal the Deputy can be assured that I will look after it.

The way the Minister looked after the builders?

If the builders were not looked after the fellows selling the houses would be doing pretty badly but they seem to be doing all right.

Some builders are doing all right.
