Vol. 286 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Registered Unemployed.

1.

asked the Taoiseach the number of persons registered as unemployed in the Dublin area at present.

The number of persons on the live register at the four Dublin employment exchanges on 14th November, 1975 was 31,361. The figure includes 1,183 systematic short-time workers.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary in a position to give a breakdown of the figures for city and county? Can he tell us how many building workers are included in the total?

The question did not ask for that but I have some figures for Dublin county. The answer was complied on the assumption that the Deputy only meant the city. The total city and county figures were 34,306 on 14th November, 1975 as against 24,129 on 15th November, 1974. I have not got figures for individual trades.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary state if the figure includes those from outside the county who come to work in Dublin?

I cannot say.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary state if there is any agency through which he might indicate the number of people unemployed but who are not registered as such?

I do not know of any figures available to me that would enable me to give the Deputy that information. However, I shall certainly inquire into the matter.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary state how many operatives from the construction industry are unemployed?

As I have told the Deputy, the figures I have given were those that were asked for, as I understood the question. If the Deputy puts down a question with regard to the supplementary he has asked I will get an answer for him if I can.

Will the Parliamentary Secretary state if the answer given includes school leavers who are not employed?

It includes people who are on the register.

It does not include school leavers?

If they are on the register it includes them.

Is the Parliamentary Secretary referring to the live register?

Then it does not include school leavers.

It does not include them.

Can the Parliamentary Secretary indicate how many school leavers are unemployed?

About 25,000.

I am calling Question No. 2.
