Vol. 287 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Fisheries Policy.

24.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries the proposals, if any, for a new EEC common fisheries policy; and if he will make a statement on general fisheries policy.

A review of certain aspects of the EEC common fisheries policy has already been initiated in the context of developments at the United Nations Law of the Sea Conference but concrete proposals for changes in the policy have not as yet been put forward by the EEC Commission. It will be the aim of the Government to secure from this review the maximum possible advantages for our fishing industry. At home, the Government's policy of helping the development of the industry so as to enable it to make the best possible use of our fishery resources is being maintained.

I did not hear the complete answer. Did the Parliamentary Secretary say there was a proposed fishery policy? If there is, when are we to have precise details? Does it include proposals to extend the fishing limits? Is it proposed to subsidise fuel for fishermen?

The proposal to extend our exclusive fishery limits and the question of the Law of the Sea Conference are being examined by my Department in conjunction with the Department of Foreign Affairs.

The remaining questions will appear on the Order Paper for the next sitting day of the Dáil.

Could the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Finance give us now the figures referred to earlier?

Question Time has passed and he may not give them now.

He has them in the House now.

Question Time has passed. I am calling the next business. Deputy Dowling, resume your seat.

Yesterday the Chair was five minutes late and we were five minutes late starting Questions. It is now only one minute past the hour for Question Time.

On a point of correction, the Chair and his officials wait in the anteroom until there is a quorum in the House. I am not late.

Apologise.
